We are offering an Internship in Horticulture that runs for 3 months full time, or over a longer period, month on month off, or weekends, the time frame available will depend on other interns and their needs.
This is an unpaid position, and you will become a guest in our home and be working for room, board and KNOWLEDGE.
The bulk of the work will be in the production nursery.
Other works undertaken may include:
- ground preparation
- working in the vineyard/soft fruit area
- landscaping and landscape design
- general garden maintenance
- managing other workers
Work does vary seasonally.
Our aim is to train you in all aspects of nursery production on a SMALL SCALE. If you want to enter the nursery industry (or simply to grow for yourself) at an affordable level we can teach you all you'll need to know.
Training will be with Patricia in short blocks prior to each task, then a review afterward. She will outline some reading that can be undertaken to expand your knowledge base (reading/study will be done in your own time). A lot of the work carried out in the nursery is quite repetative and production line like and you need to be aware of that.
Examples of what will be covered within the Intership:
Basic propagation methods.
Repotting methods and timing.
The needs of the retailer.
Basic plant biology.
We only aim at growing small lots (approx 3,500 6" pots every 6 to 10 weeks), they will then be marketed before moving the next lot into the finishing area. This should give each intern a chance to follow the full process of pot production.
Due to a disability Patricia is no longer able to work in the industry and she sees training others as a way to stay connected with her profession. This also means there will be times she needs to rest/have time off and you will be expected to keep yourself motivated and busy.
We expect our interns to be able to adapt to our lifestyle and follow house/farm rules. Please read through the entire website to get a more thorough understanding of how we live.
Trial period. As interns will be staying with us as part of the family we have a two week trial period to see if we will all get on and also to see if you can follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely fashion.
What you will need to bring.
Sturdy workclothes and shoes.
Wide brimmed hat, leather work gloves and gardening gloves.
Note books, pens etc.
Nikko laundry markers (4 or 5 would be good) [MUST be NIKKO]
We expect horticultural interns to work 5 hours per day 6 days per week within the nursery and on internship related tasks, it may also be nessasary to work and hour or so on your day off to maintain plants if the weather is extreme. We also ask that you work to help with general farm chores and household jobs on top of this to help toward your board and accomodation. Most of the time this will be feeding animals, weeding the vege garden or washing dishes etc. if we have no other help. If there is an 'All Hands On Deck' farm project like concreting we will expect you to help out. Remember, you are part of the family.
Growing for yourself.
During your stay here you will be able to propagate and then grow on tubestock to take with you, this will be limited by ground space and water availability but we should have room for a couple of thousand 3 inch tubes. It may be possible to grow a few larger plants for propagation stock. You will need to pay for any materials you use. Time spent on production and care of these plants will be out of work hours. Plants you grow for yourself must be taken when you leave.
Second Year Visas for HelpX
We can sign for second year visas. We will give you the chance to fullfill obligations outlined by the dept. of immigration. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you meet their requirements, NOT OURS.
The dept. of immigration requires that the industry standard is followed, which is a 38 hour week.
All work carried out by visa seekers will be within the works outlined by the Dept. of Immigration so will differ from others doing the Internship. We will also require that you contribute to the running of the household, THIS WILL NOT BE PART OF THE 38 HOUR WORK WEEK. For example, sweeping floors, preparing meals, personal laundry, the normal chores you would carry out in your own home. We expect you to clean up after yourself and not create more work for others.
As we do not have an ABN you will not be able to apply for your visa online.
We have two old caravans available. (see HelpX page for more information).
If we are fully booked and you're keen to complete an internship you can provide your own accomodation and food.
